What makes McCandless homes different
McCandless is North Hills suburbia at its most characteristic: substantial single-family housing on wooded, rolling lots, built out steadily from the late fifties through to the eighties, with newer infill and townhouse development added since around McCandless Crossing and Cumberland Woods.
The build era puts most of it in the aluminium branch wiring window and the Federal Pacific and Zinsco era together, which is the same story as much of the postwar suburban ring. What distinguishes McCandless is less what is in the walls and more what has been added to these houses since.
These are houses that get improved. Finished basements, sunrooms, converted garages, additions, pools, hot tubs, whole-house air conditioning — the North Hills has a long history of owners staying put and investing rather than moving. Every one of those improvements adds load, and almost none of them came with a service upgrade. The result is the single most common McCandless finding: a well-maintained house on a service that quietly ran out of headroom about three improvements ago. When the car charger becomes the thing that finally exceeds it, that is not the charger's fault.
The tree cover is the other defining local factor. The mature canopy across Ingomar, Peebles and the streets around North Park is one of the reasons people live here, and it also stands over a great deal of overhead distribution. Storm damage to service masts is a recurring call after a summer thunderstorm or a wet snow, and the mast, weatherhead and meter enclosure are the homeowner's responsibility rather than the utility's — which is why a house can stay dark after the street comes back on.
Lot size and topography give the third pattern. Wooded, rolling parcels mean detached garages, sheds and workshops set away from the house, often downhill, and the feeder runs to reach them are longer than people expect.
Permits run through the town under the state Uniform Construction Code with third-party electrical inspection.
