Why this is a regional demand, not a luxury

Three things about greater Pittsburgh combine to produce long outages. The terrain is hills and river valleys, which makes for winding distribution routes. The tree cover is heavy and mature, and a great deal of it stands directly over overhead lines — including nearly all of the older city streets and most of the townships. And the weather does two things well: summer thunderstorms that bring limbs down fast, and wet, heavy snow that loads them until they go.

The pattern that follows is consistent. Dense, well-crewed city circuits are restored first. What size generator do I need?

It follows from what you want running, not from the size of the house. A unit covering heat, the fridge, the sump pump, a well pump and some lighting is very different in cost from a whole-house unit that also carries air conditioning. We size it against the circuits you name.

Why do I need a transfer switch?

Because backfeeding a house — running a generator into a dryer or range outlet — pushes power back out onto the street and can kill a lineworker working to restore it. A transfer switch isolates the house from the grid before the generator runs. It is what makes the installation both safe and legal.

Natural gas or propane?

Natural gas if there is a supply at the property, since there is no tank to refill and no running out during a long outage. Propane where there is no gas service, which is more common at the rural edges of our radius. The fuel affects the sizing, the pad and the run.

How often does it need servicing?

These units run a self-test weekly and need routine servicing — oil, filters, battery — much like a small engine, because that is what it is. Anyone selling you one without mentioning that is not giving you the full picture.

Is a portable generator not enough?
